Summary

Chimwemwe mu'bereki association (Joyful motherhood) typically enrolls 5 to 8 orphaned infants monthly into the Baby Care Program. The majority of enrolled infants are identified shortly after birth from either Ethel Munthalika maternity, the referral maternity hospital for the Central Region of Malawi, Bwaila Hospital and all communities around Lilongwe district. Combined these two hospitals handle 1000 deliveries each month. Other babies are identified from Kamuzu Central Hospital's pediatric

Challenge

Currently in Malawi when a woman dies in childbirth or shortly thereafter and leaves a surviving infant, the usual outcome is that the infant also dies within a short period. The commonly held belief in Malawi that a baby wants to follow its mother in death speaks to the frequency of this unnecessary second tragedy. In truth, orphans die largely because families are left without the means to support their life - no nourishment appropriate for supporting orphans babies

Solution

Baby care program-typically enrolls 5 to 8 orphaned infants monthly into the Baby Care Program. The majority of enrolled infants are identified shortly after birth from either Ethel Munthalika maternity, the referral maternity hospital for the Central Region of Malawi, Bwaila Hospital and all communities around Lilongwe district. Combined these two hospitals handle 1000 deliveries each month. Other babies are identified from Kamuzu Central Hospital's pediatric malnutrition ward.

Long-Term Impact

Evaluation *: How do you know that you are succeeding in solving the problem? According to the organization monitoring and evaluation it has shown that the organization remain one of local NGO which is committed in supporting and saving vulnerable babies and children as it was further recommended by Malawi government through ministry of health were the organization has been given free office with free utilities as well as long term partnership in strengthen health care capacity among nurses
