The upward trend of HIV prevalence among pregnant women, mixed results of various PMTCT interventions attempted calls for renewed efforts to extend prophylaxis and make it more effective. 200 HIV+ pregnant women receive PMTCT services which will reduce mother-to-child transmission, increase availability of post-natal care and support services for mothers living with HIV, infected/affected children, caregivers where there is great need for better follow-up care with increased advocacy work.
Due limited PMTCT service centres, a number of women are not able to travel long distances to access PMTCT services. HIV+ pregnant women who are able, majority lack follow-up care and support after the birth of their children including postpartum care and family planning services and prevent HIV infection. They lack follow up support care HIV+ children or exposed to HIV. There is lack of evidence based result indicators and community support structures committed to informing families of PMTCT.
HPH will build staff capacities in PMTCT integration, train VHTs in raising their awareness, community linkages and referrals of HIV+ pregnant women, procure and distribute maternity kits to HIV+ pregnant women, develop IEC/BCC materials, provide emergency obstetric and emergency transport to health facilities, train mothers on child care, family and nutrition. Conduct monthly and quarterly HIV/AIDS awareness and sensitization including treatment and male involvement advocacy work.
This project will support 200 HIV+ pregnant women hence reducing mother-to-child HIV transmission with reduced maternal death; this will greatly increase awareness and knowledge among the general population with increased utilisation of health facilities. Trained VHTs will promote health system strenghtening, access to follow ups and pyshcosocial support services increasing participation of beneficiares in development activities and inclusive decision making process reducing poverty levels.
