Nowadays, English is one of the most used languages all over the world; according the National Census only 4.5% of the Mexican population knows how to speak this language (INEGI, 2010). Learning English in Mexico is not as easy, most of the public schools do not have a good teaching system. The teachers, whom most of the time do not know the language, are given instructions to run English classes, resulting in bad quality lessons. On the other hand, private schools run good English lessons, however not everybody can afford to send their children to them. There are also specialized English schools but often have prices that not all the people can pay. Knowing English opens different opportunities on the work environment, especially in Quintana Roo state, where most of the economic activities are related to the tourist industry.
As empowering children is one of the most important objectives not only for Save the Children (our partners in the childcare project), but also for GVI, therefore, after a month of working at the Ludoteca (toy library) and under the request of the Ludotecarias (teachers at the ludoteca), the volunteers started preparing material to teach English twice a week to the children.
The lessons have been eagerly welcomed and extremely successful. The classes have combined practical, visual and written learning, in an attempt to reach as many children as possible. The children love the lessons and are eager to learn more and more. We are also helping the Ludotecarias with planning new projects and activities to use in weeks to come. The ludotecarias often try to use the words learnt at the English lessons to reinforce their knowledge and to practice their pronunciation.
By teaching English to these children, we are empowering to have the resources to become productive citizens and to get better chances of finding a better job and to improve their life quality.
