#GivingTuesday Support Foster Grandparents Program

#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that connects diverse groups of individuals, communities, and organizations around the world for one common purpose: to celebrate and encourage giving.

Following the frenzy of Black Friday and Cyber Monday holiday gift shopping for family and friends, tomorrow on #GivingTuesday November 27th you have the opportunity to slow down and make a meaningful gift to a wonderful program that benefits 15,000 social economically disadvantaged children at 60 volunteer sites in Washington, DC including Early Head Start/Head Start centers, Elementary Schools and Children's Hospitals. A dedicated team of 200 UPO Foster Grandparents (FGP’s) annually give over 180,000 volunteer hours, engaged in tutoring, mentoring, providing social emotional support and assisting students in learning programs in cooperation with school systems and children’s hospitals. Proven outcomes are improved school readiness and K-12 success.

As a past supporter of Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program your support has been invaluable in helping to cover the cost of training, materials, uniforms, and daily travel for our DC senior volunteer FGPs. Your generosity is greatly appreciated.

We were featured in a Washington Post article (linked below) that showcases the great work UPO does in the community. Here is an excerpt:

"Cynthia’s, a 64-year-old retiree, who has survived two heart surgeries, is one of more than 200 D.C. seniors from low-income households working as classroom grandparents in the city’s schools.

Four years after Cynthia became a foster grandparent, the refrigerator in her one-bedroom apartment is adorned with a drawing from a boy in one of her classes — her favorite memento from her time in the classroom. She is pursuing credentials to work in early-childhood education and has learned education techniques that she can pass to her own grandchildren.

She arrives at school about 8 a.m. wearing her blue Foster Grandparent apron. She sharpens pencils and arranges classroom materials, waiting for the children to arrive. Some of the children hug her, others whisper secrets in her ear. Throughout it all, her theatrical facial expressions and warm laughter fill the classroom, with Cynthia treating the children more like her grandchildren than her students.

The grandparents know to go to distracted children and provide them with attention, hoping to keep the entire class on track.

Born out of the 1964 federal War on Poverty legislation, the Foster Grandparent Program aims to give seniors across the country a purpose in retirement by providing some of the neediest children with mentors and giving teachers help in the classroom. The grandparents choose their hours, most working 15 to 30 a week.

The United Planning Organization, a community agency founded in 1962 to bring programs to the District’s low-income residents, operates the Foster Grandparent Program."

#GivingTuesday is an opportunity for you to extend your generosity to bring about real change in your community. To help UPO's Foster Grandparents Program start the year-end fundraising season off right, our host platform GlobalGiving is releasing $150,000 in matching funds over a 24-hour period on #GivingTuesday.

Our hope is this match opportunity incentive will give you our loyal supporters every reason possible to generously celebrate and support the change you’re making in the world. We have a waiting list of 100 seniors to be FGPs, 10 educational institutions seeking to join the program and every current partnering volunteer site has requested additional FGPs. Your donation will help the UPO Foster Grandparent Program meet these additional needs.

See the attached article from the Washington Post on Tuesday 10/29/18 about the work of UPO’s FGPs.

Please be sure to make your #GivingTuesday gift to Support UPO's Foster Grandparents Program tomorrow Tuesday Nov. 27, 2018, between 12:01am and 11:59pm.
