1 backpack gives endless possibilities to students
1 backpack gives endless possibilities to students

1 in 4 Californian children are living in poverty; over 350,000 children in the nine counties that make up the San Francisco Bay Area are eligible to receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. In an area where the cost of living has skyrocketed, families struggle to pay rent and feed their children, leaving no room for purchasing a backpack filled with school supplies. Family Giving Tree strives to close the opportunity gap by investing in these children.

A school admin from one of our partner schools in East Palo Alto explains, “The support that the families get from the backpacks with supplies has been invaluable. Our families struggle to make it in the Bay Area with many of them living multiple families in living spaces that were not designed for multiple families. Without the Family Giving Tree, our families and students would not be as prepared for school.”

We believe that a backpack with school supplies gives endless possibilities to low-income students. Family Giving Tree needs your help to provide 40,000 students with the school supplies they need to succeed. To help break the cycle of poverty through Family Giving Tree’s 2017 Back-to-School Drive, consider making a donation, filling a backpack, leading a drive, or volunteer at our warehouse. In the spring, students and teachers are thinking about the end of the school year; however, Family Giving Tree is already planning our Back-to-School Drive to prepare low-income students for the first days of school in late August. While many factors contribute to the cycle of poverty, providing a backpack filled with essential school supplies removes a socioeconomic barrier for these students to engage in their education.

Because of the generosity of our community, the Back-to-School Drive has provided backpacks to over 240,000 students in need over the past two decades, making Family Giving Tree the largest backpack distributor  in California.

Partnering with more than 300 schools in Silicon Valley, our goal is to provide 40,000 low-income students backpacks filled with essential school supplies this year. Your help is crucial to this endeavor.  In the coming months, community support facilitates backpack deliveries to Family Giving Tree’s Back-to-School Warehouse for distribution to schools across the seven counties in the San Francisco Bay Area.

You can support the Drive in two ways: make a donation online or shop for a backpack and bring it to our warehouse in August. Your support of Family Giving Tree is an investment in the future of the Silicon Valley community.

Education cuts hurt Students and Teachers
Education cuts hurt Students and Teachers

Students aren’t the only ones who start the school year without the necessary supplies to thrive in the classroom. With the ever growing class size and shrinking budget cuts to education, teachers often have to pay out of pocket to provide the proper supplies for their students.

This is where Family Giving Tree steps in. Thanks to your generosity, along with providing backpacks filled with school supplies to students in-need, Family Giving Tree also provides the teachers at our partner schools with Teacher Boxes.

These boxes are filled with extra supplies needed to help teachers do their job to prepare their students for the future. Because of you, their job is made all the easier. Thank you!

Spark a Love of Learning
Spark a Love of Learning

The final numbers are in for the 2016 Back to School Drive! Thanks to your generosity, over 39,200 local, low-income students went back to school prepared to learn and thrive. For students living in poverty, a backpack filled with school supplies provides opportunities for a bright future.

For students like those at Washington Elementary, a school in Downtown San Jose where 100% of the enrolled population are living in poverty, these backpacks will help spark lifelong passions and ignite an interest in learning.

Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. You have made a positive impact in the community.

The tools to succeed!
The tools to succeed!

What is the impact of a backpack for the over 354,000 children living in poverty in the Bay Area? It is the confidence to participate in the classroom. It is the ability to finish homework on time. It is the catalyst that sparks the love of learning and lays a firm foundation for a successful future. A 2015 study of 70,000 teachers nationwide found that access to quality school supplies have a significant impact on:

  • Increased interest in learning – 78%
  • Increased class preparedness – 92%
  • Improved self-esteem – 72%

This is where you come in. Through Family Giving Tree’s 2016 Back-to-School Drive, you can give hope to 37,000 local low-income students by giving them access to backpacks filled with the tools needed to thrive in the classroom. You can impact the lives of those most in-need by continuing to invest in their future.
