Many oversea Chinese face difficulties to look after their parents in China. Our parents aged between 70~90 years old are a generation who has expereiced war and hunger without much of savings. Yongnianlou is one of Shanghai Xintu brand program dedicated to support families by running community living centers with daycare services for dementia and disabled patients. This GlobalGiving project is planning to raise funds for 8 community living centers in 8 cities where Shanghai Xintu has projects.
China's population is ageing. As the state withdraws service provisions, the Chinese family is being encouraged to shoulder the bulk of the elderly care responsibility. However, this is daunting task as family size decreases and family being disrupted by migration or immigration. For instance, we have seen many oversea Chinese can not look after their parents and few things can be done to prevent their parents to be disabled. There is lack of community daycare facilities and services in China.
Yongnianlou program already supports 5000 families in Shanghai and 2000 families in Qingdao by running of 5 community facilities with 4 daycare centers. Yongnianlou team provide daycare services for elderly with high risk of dementia or early dementia. Xintu volunteers are trained at the daycare center for the skills of risk assessment as well as prevention activities for elderly people at home. This model has been approved to look after parents better in their own community
With US$50000 support, Yongnianlou Team is able to open a new daycare center in a community which is family style, 200-300 square meters space, 10-20 weak/dementia elderly person recruited, and about 100-200 nearby families supported by Xintu volunteers. Yongnianlou can open this types of daycare center at any communities your nominated in 8 cities of China where Xintu has project and local resources. It has been approved to be a model for looking after your parents better in a sustainable way.
