Project #1521

Community Building for 1000 Jews & Muslims 2012-14

by Interfaith Encounter Association (IEA)

March 20th 2015

Attended in the encounter: Fawda, Manal, Iftekhar, Shani, Ayala, Raz, Adi, Shani and Yael (total of 9 young women).

This second encounter of the group was planned for acquaintance and coordination of expectations. We had indeed language gaps (the women of East Jerusalem were not fluent in Hebrew and the women from West Jerusalem were not fluent in Arabic) and we found original ways to overcome them.

Through photos, pantomime and songs we downloaded from our cellphones – we managed to get to know each other. We spoke about engagement, marriage, children and also a bit about death and sickness (which are also part of life).

The atmosphere was very good and humor and laughter we integral part of the encounter.

The third encounter took place in the Swedish Theological Institute on the early afternoon of Wednesday, April 15th. Attended – Yael, Ayala, Meital, Fadwa, Salam and Amal (6 women).

Since we had new participants – each one shared about herself, her family and her activities, and answered follow-up questions.

The encounter was held in a very good atmosphere and was accompanied by light lunch.

One of the Jewish participants (Meital) who is fluent in Arabic helped with translations.

But when we wanted to turn to the literary text, we discovered that our time has passed and scheduled the next encounter.

Encounter between students of the two schools – A-Salam in Majd el-Krum and Dekel in Karmiel.

The encounter focused on the customs of Passover.

After the Kids from A-Salam were welcomed at Dekel school, all pupils gathered together and we explained to them how the day is going to look like and what we are about to do in it.

The day had three parts:

  1. Explanations about Passover and why it is celebrated.
  2. The differences between the Jewish Passover and the Christian Easter and why each community celebrates their Holiday.
  3. The students were divided into three mixed groups for creative activities with the art teachers on various aspects of the Holiday: food, religious figures, symbols etc.

Finally the students had a joint football gave and we concluded the day.

Summary and pick-day for the project

The children met, together with the educators, in A-Salam School and held a joint conversation about the year's activity. The children shared about their experience in participating in joint activities with children from the other sector, what did they gain from it? How did they feel? What was new? What needs to be improved?

We also got feedback from the parents when the children spoke about the support and encouragement they received from their parents to participate in such encounters that bridge between the children and remove prejudices and stereotypes. Finally, each student wrote a sentence about peace and living together. We concluded with sports games in mixed groups, which was very enjoyable for all.

Bingo game
Bingo game

The encounter on May 25th was divided into three parts:

First we held a Bingo game with names: each student wrote his or her name on the board and then each one of them chose nine names for their personal board. Then we played the Bingo game.

In the second part, the schools choir sang, in Hebrew and in Arabic, the song of Eric Eninstein: "I and you will change the world". We all joined the choir and sang along.

The third part of the encounter was dedicated to Jerusalem. The jids were divided into working groups, each focussing on a different activity. One was working on a crossword puzzles about sites in Jerusalem. Another was answering quizzes on what we know about Jerusalem. A third group was trying to create as many words as possible from the letters of the word Jerusalem. And another group was composing a jigsaw puzzle with a photo of Jerusalem.
