Support Landmine victims in Quang Binh, Vietnam

Summary

Quang Binh province has about 19,928 landmine victims. Most of them are living in rural and mountainous areas with poor economic conditions. In addition, landmine accidents more or less affect their ability to work. Therefore, it's difficult for them to obtain a stable job with income. Without a sustainable economic base, they are also limited in accessing health care service. The project hopes to empower landmine victims to increase their income, self-sustainability and social participation.

Challenge

Quang Binh Province is amongst the most devastated part of the country during the Vietnam War with approximately 19,928 landmine victims. A majority of them have difficulties in earning a living. It is difficult for them to find a stable work, and due to the levels of poverty in the area, landmine victims are often financially-dependent on their family. Without a sustainable economic base, landmine survivors also limited in accessing health care services and hard to participate in the society.

Solution

Project will provide seed-funding to help landmine victims find a way out of the indignity of poverty, achieve financial self-sustainability, find the support and confidence to counter the stigma against persons with disabilities. With this funding, they can purchase livestock/equipment for livelihood development and cover medical expenses such as surgery, treatment at upper medical centre, rehabilitation.

Long-Term Impact

By providing landmine survivors with seed-funding, not only will they become financially-independent and self-sustainable, but also increase their social participation by linking them to local resources to expand their income generating activities. The combination of sustainable economic base and health recovery would increase their confidence and quality of life to build up a strong anti-mine advocacy and peer support group for fellow mine survivors.
