Summary

Western Kenya has had long rains in the months of March and April 2023. This has resulted in flooding in some parts of Kisumu County. Affected households have been relocated to evacuation camps. In the camps there are concerns on health and sanitation as the affected persons do not have safe water for drinking. The latrines are submerged thus posing danger for outbreak of waterborne diseases. Safe Water & AIDS project would wish to support through provision of water treatment & hygiene products.

Challenge

During the months of March and April 2023, Western Kenya has experienced excessive heavy rains. This has resulted in community members Nyando plains in Kisumu County to be displaced. There are currently more than 250 household members moved to evacuation camps on higher grounds. Although Red Cross is working with the affected communities, they are mainly distributing shelter and food items. Therefore, there is need to provide non-food items with more focus to hygiene components.

Solution

Safe Water & AIDS project will provide rapid response to reduce morbidity and mortality to prevent disease outbreaks to the displaced families. During floods, disease outbreaks such as cholera, dysentery and malaria are witnessed. SWAP will therefore respond towards this through: Training on safe water and general hygiene management to community leaders, Community Health volunteers and displaced community members. Distribution of water treatment, storage and hygiene products, mosquito nets.

Long-Term Impact

The project will train 450 affected families and community leaders on safe water systems and hygiene management which will help prevent outbreak of water related diseases and Malaria. In the long term this will reduce morbidity and mortality. The training will educate the affected families to change their behaviour on observing health and hygiene components which will support their health and wellbeing.
