"Someone who can't be cured can still be helped". This Vera Hospice Charity Fund's motto may seem like common knowledge, but 10 years ago, when the foundation first began supporting hospices and terminally ill people, very few members of Russian society would agree. Death and dying have been taboo subjects for decades. As a result of this negligence, children and adults with different life-limiting illnesses and their loved ones were left with no professional care, in pain and despair.
Today the healthcare system has changed a lot and so has the society's attitude towards hospice care. We've come closer to a better-organized and more accessible system of help for the terminally ill. But there is still a lot to be done. In Moscow alone there are 12 hospices under the ward of Vera. Their financing and proper functioning largely depend on charity donations. There are essential expenditures, which are not covered by state and municipal budgeting or covered only partially.
Vera is the only non-profit organization in Russia to support hospices and their patients and make up for the shortage of funding. By donating to this cause, you support 3,000 people with terminal illnesses, help ease their pain and find comfort. Each one of these 3000 is a unique story, with unique dreams and hopes. We may not be able to make all of those dreams some true, but we can make sure that we've done everything to provide them with the conditions for dignity and stop the pain.
The amount of funds Vera needs in order to substantially and systematically support hospices in Moscow averages $75,079 per month. This is a goal we can reach only by joined effort, by coming together to achieve the improbable. We know this will work if we do. We know that care and compassion can work wonders. Let's work some together!
