Summary

AMDA operated mobile clinics in evacuation shelters in cities stricken by the Earthquake and Tsunami. One of these shelters was a high school gym. Students had lost their homes and financial backing. AMDA started 3-year programme of supporting high school students by providing grants. Students who wish to be health professionals will receive a grant of 15,000 yen/month untill they graduate from high school. 25 students of two high schools have already received this grant.

Challenge

People in the afflicted areas lost their properties when their houses and farmlands were simply washed away by the disastrous Tsunami. It will take a long time for them to recover from this hopeless confusion and economic difficulties. Though schools restarted, thanks to the unremitting efforts by the school staffs, not a few students are facing difficulties in paying tuition fees and other costs entailed by school life.

Solution

AMDA started a 3-year programme to support high school students who wish to become medical professional. As of September 2011, 53 students of 4 schools have received the grant from AMDA. In their letters sent to AMDA, they highly appreciate the grant because it will lessen the financial burden of them and their family during this hard period.

Long-Term Impact

AMDA's grant has been given to those who wish to work as medical professionals in the future. Even though the number of beneficiaries are small, such a grant will motivate students, give them hope for the future, and eventually contribute to the recovery and enhancement of medical services in the communities.
