Objectives
A. To enhance knowledge level to embrace stigma and discrimination among the wider community and to inculcate behavioural changes among the high-risk groups and vulnerable communities in Tehri Garhwal of Uttarakhand.
- To provide direct support through Home Based Care to 30 HIV infected people and provide educational and nutritional support to 10 children who are semi orphaned or orphaned and children from economically weaker sections, whose parents are infected with HIV&AIDS
C. To facilitate and advocate for a responsive government and political structures at local level for better service provision to HIV positive people and their families in the state of Uttarakhand.
D. To aware church leaders and evangelist for care and support to HIV positive people
E. To provide medical and pastorial care to the critically ill people at organization’s Hospital
Target group
« 30 HIV infected families will have improved life after receiving care and support
« 10 children orphan or semi-orphan due to AIDS will be able to continue their normal education without any health and economic hazards. The children will also receive proper nutritional support to maintain good health.
« 30 HIV infected families who are economical poor will have income through alternative income generation programme to support their family needs.
« People with high-risk behaviour will have proper knowledge to avoid risky behaviour.
« Community will be aware on the issues of HIV&AIDS and the people infected and affected will be free from stigma and discrimination in their own community.
GCDWS started working on HIV in 2005. At present, GCDWS is involved in Behaviour Change Communication (BCC), Psycho-social support, counseling and Care, Care and support for HIV infected and affected with HIV and AIDS , Networking with government health services .
GCDWS is also involved in building capacities of the Churches recognising its potential. Churches are located in the community and this can play a crucial role in bringing awareness and giving guidance to the community and also have the volunteer force to care for PLHAs.
GCDWS directly assists PLHAs and their families by providing psycho-social care, children’s education, nutritional support, assisting in the treatment of Opportunistic Infection (OI) and in accessing Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) from the government. The main focus of GCDWS programme can be summarised as follows:

Combating stigma and discrimination
GCDWS has conducted awareness programmes in 5-6 house Churches,5 schools with almost 200 adolescent children, 5 VHSC with approx 35-40 members, 10 SHG with approx 120-130 members and among communities in general across Uttrakhand. GCDWS has used its module ‘Christian Response to HIV&AIDS’ to train/orient pastors on the issue of HIV&AIDS and equip them with various skills to provide care to the PLHAs. GCDWS has trained 6 pastors on the issue of HIV & AIDS who have further conducted awareness programmes at comunity levels for Churches. GCDWS has also been providing resource materials to 6 Churches to create awareness.
Prevention
GCDWS has created awareness on HIV prevention in schools, colleges and in churches regarding abstinence and faithfulness in marriages, through workshops and seminars.
Care and Support
GCDWS has an inclusive approach in building capacities of Churches to be a caring community through proviing support to HIV infected and affected families. Through Home Based Care (HBC) programmes, GCDWS has reached out to 50 families including children. GCDWS assists PLHAs and their families through psycho-social care, children education, nutritional support, assisting in getting treated for Opportunistic Infection (OI) and in accessing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) from the government.
