Djurdjina doing her homework
Djurdjina doing her homework

Djurdjina and her family lost their home in 2014. The floods created landslides that swept their house, destroying almost everything. Rebuilding their lives has taken a toll on her parents, forcing them to make sacrifices. When there are two kids in school, who have plenty of necessary expenses, it becomes even more difficult to prioritize how and where your money will be spent.

The monthly scholarship that Djurdjina receives helps the family immensely. She is able to study from her own set of textbooks and can purchase necessary supplies that the school does not provide. Djurdjina is a bright and studious girl who, with the support of the scholarship, does not have to worry anymore about using her sister’s outdated textbooks or using second-hand, worn-out materials.

Despite the challenges around her, she's been able to maintain an excellent average. Last semester, she even had a perfect grade average.

Djurdjina still has another two years of schooling ahead of her, but in the future, she would like to study social work. She says it is because it incorporates psychology, one of her favorite school subjects alongside Serbian language and literature, and helping others.

You did this! Your donation made this possible for Djurdjina.

Earlier this year, flooding hit the area where Djurdjina lives. While her family’s home was safe this time around, a lot of other families were not as lucky. To continue to be able to provide assistance to families affected by flooding, we need your help. In 2020, if you set up a recurring donation, GlobalGiving will match the first donation 100%. For a little as $15 a month, you will help one child receive a warm lunch for one month, helping them focus in school. For many, this will be the only warm meal they will receive in a day.

“To be well-read, children must first be well fed.”

Don’t wait, donate today.

Aleksandra presenting her research
Aleksandra presenting her research

Aleksandra’s heart is so full. From a young age, she has had dreams of wanting to help others, no matter how. Whether it was by helping an old grandma on the street carry her groceries, help her brother with his homework or volunteer in class, Aleksandra did whatever she could to help.

In high school, she learned more about different areas of psychology and had a lightbulb moment, where she realized "This is what I want to study!"

Unfortunately, without your support, she wouldn’t have been able to continue her education. Shortly before she was set to start college, her father’s health deteriorated and he lost his job; her mother became the primary breadwinner in the family, forced to pay for the mortgage, food, bills and her brother’s school expenses. Because there are no institutions of higher education in her town, she has to travel to the closest one and live in university housing, get food and pay for additional college expenses, all of which cost money, which the family had very little of.

Aleksandra had two choices: abandon her dream of becoming a psychotherapist or go to university, work a bit part-time to cover the essential expenses, and work towards her goal of helping others through the field of psychology.

Food insecurity is a big problem for college-aged students, and we are glad to offer help and support whenever possible. Thanks to donations coming from the generosity of our friends and supporters, we were able to cover her food plan, ensuring that she can study and thus not having to worry when her next meal will come (if at all). In Aleksandra’s case, she was able to work part-time in her field, gain practical experience, all while pursuing her studies. Last year, she even got a chance to present her work at a student conference at her university (where students from all across Serbia came to showcase their research and findings).

If you did not know, the majority of our donations come from individual donors who make, on a monthly or yearly basis, donations under $50. In celebration of such donors, GlobalGiving will be matching all donations under $50 at 50% from March 23-27 and we invite you to participate.

The work that we do is entirely funded through donations and would not be possible without the philanthropic support of our community. We are counting on your support to help us surpass our goal and invest in our children's future.

Please consider donating and making a child’s day. If you can't donate, consider sharing Aleksandra’s story with your friends and starting a fundraiser. Don't forget to stay in touch with us, over Facebook or Instagram, we’d love to hear from you.

With love,

Pomoc deci team

Hi friend,

Happy holidays from all of us at Pomoc deci! Have you made your 2020 New Year’s resolutions? We have! Our wish for next year is to be able to continue to provide opportunities for young children to succeed in school. This holiday season, please consider helping us out. The work that we do is dependent on individuals like you.

This is why we would like you to meet Mina (11) and Lena (7), two sisters from Kragujevac. Their mother is a single-parent, and on top of work and taking care of her two daughters, she is also the primary caregiver of her sick mother-in-law. For the past few months, Mina and Lena have been going to an after-school program where they get homework help, a hot lunch and are able to exercise and play with friends.

The help that we get from individuals like you, helps the family immensely. By being in an after-school program, their mom is able to work. She says that, without the assistance, she wouldn’t know what to do. Finances are tight, but at least she says she “doesn’t have to worry what the kids will eat in school.”

By donating, you will help children like Mina and Lena and many others who are in the same position.

After all, well fed children make much better students because they are able to concentrate and retain information better!

What can you do?

  • Donate! If you set up a recurring donation, GlobalGiving will match it.
  • Ask your employer for a corporate gift card, or
  • Reach out to your network of friends, peers and colleagues and start a fundraiser. For every 5 people you know, those 5 people know another 5!

These are small acts of kindness, but to young children are invaluable :)

Don’t forget to connect with us online (facebook, instagram or our website), we’d love to hear from you!

Warm regards,

Pomoc deci team

After the May 2014 floods, many families were displaced as a result. We have been helping families by providing resources for kids who were affected and thus ameliorating in some ways their plight.

Nikola is one of those kids. After the flooding, his family lost everything. His childhood home was ruined and forced the family, which includes his parents, brother and a sister to move into a rented space for more than eight months. Due to circumstances, the family was forced to pay for home repairs themselves. All of this was happening while Nikola was finalizing his elementary school education and preparing for the high school entrance exam. Donors such as yourself were able to help Nikola continue his education.

Today, Nikola is in his third-year of high school. He is studying electrical and computer engineering and would like to continue his education at the applied studies level. He is also proficient in foreign languages and taught himself English.

Over the past year, Pomoc Deci has been able to provide scholarships, daily hot meals or sets of books and we would like to continue to be able to do so. In order to continue, we need your help. This project is reliant solely on donors such as yourself and 100% of the donation goes towards providing for these children. The donation can be as low as $12 which would provide a hot meal for onemonth for one child, or as high as $500 which would provide a scholarship for one student for the year, or anything in between.

Don’t forget to connect with Pomoc Deci on our website and facebook page. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing the fundraiser with your friends.

Aleksandar, the Best Pupil of his Generation
Aleksandar, the Best Pupil of his Generation

“We have sent you a most recent photo of Aleksandar at our neighbour’s house, since our house has been destroyed in the most recent floods again and our neighbours have offered us a room till we could repair and dry our barn”, Dragoslav, Aleksandar’s Dad wrote in his e-mail sending us the photos of all the awards Aleksandar received at the graduation ceremony. “We can’t begin to tell you how grateful we are for the scholarship for Aleksandar for the last four years, since the first flood disaster! He could have never accomplished this without this support! We are so proud of him, but eternally grateful to you and all the people who donated their money to enable this scholarship”, wrote in his emotional letter, Aleksandar’s Dad.

Aleksandar has just graduated from High School with the Highest Honours and with a national Award for the pupils who not only have 5.0 as general average mark throughout a four-year secondary level education, but have also shown extraordinary success at various national competitions. In addition to that, he has received an award for being a best pupil of his generation in the School.

Four years ago, during the worst flood in the region, their 50-year-old family’s house was completely destroyed. Aleksandar, his sister and parents were literally left homeless. They moved to a barn in which the whole family has lived whilst trying to rebuild the house. Last month, new floods made even the barn impossible to sleep in.

Every single dinar that the family can earn goes to the efforts to make their house inhabitable again. And your donations have made it possible for Aleksandar to have clothes, shoes, text-books and school material to go to school. All his awards have been made possible because of your help!

Thank you for supporting us to help children like Aleksandar!

In just two weeks (on July the 18th), GlobalGiving Foundation is organising a July Bonus Day when donations starting at $100 and up to $1,000 will be matched while $250,000 in matching funds remain. The higher the donation, the higher the match! Please, consider helping us provide scholarships for children like Aleksandar next school year (one full-school-year scholarship for one child is 600 USD or 550 EURO!
