Hi friend,

Happy holidays from all of us at Pomoc deci! Have you made your 2020 New Year’s resolutions? We have! Our wish for next year is to be able to continue to provide opportunities for young children to succeed in school. This holiday season, please consider helping us out. The work that we do is dependent on individuals like you.

This is why we would like you to meet Mina (11) and Lena (7), two sisters from Kragujevac. Their mother is a single-parent, and on top of work and taking care of her two daughters, she is also the primary caregiver of her sick mother-in-law. For the past few months, Mina and Lena have been going to an after-school program where they get homework help, a hot lunch and are able to exercise and play with friends.

The help that we get from individuals like you, helps the family immensely. By being in an after-school program, their mom is able to work. She says that, without the assistance, she wouldn’t know what to do. Finances are tight, but at least she says she “doesn’t have to worry what the kids will eat in school.”

By donating, you will help children like Mina and Lena and many others who are in the same position.

After all, well fed children make much better students because they are able to concentrate and retain information better!

What can you do?

  • Donate! If you set up a recurring donation, GlobalGiving will match it.
  • Ask your employer for a corporate gift card, or
  • Reach out to your network of friends, peers and colleagues and start a fundraiser. For every 5 people you know, those 5 people know another 5!

These are small acts of kindness, but to young children are invaluable :)

Don’t forget to connect with us online (facebook, instagram or our website), we’d love to hear from you!

Warm regards,

Pomoc deci team

After the May 2014 floods, many families were displaced as a result. We have been helping families by providing resources for kids who were affected and thus ameliorating in some ways their plight.

Nikola is one of those kids. After the flooding, his family lost everything. His childhood home was ruined and forced the family, which includes his parents, brother and a sister to move into a rented space for more than eight months. Due to circumstances, the family was forced to pay for home repairs themselves. All of this was happening while Nikola was finalizing his elementary school education and preparing for the high school entrance exam. Donors such as yourself were able to help Nikola continue his education.

Today, Nikola is in his third-year of high school. He is studying electrical and computer engineering and would like to continue his education at the applied studies level. He is also proficient in foreign languages and taught himself English.

Over the past year, Pomoc Deci has been able to provide scholarships, daily hot meals or sets of books and we would like to continue to be able to do so. In order to continue, we need your help. This project is reliant solely on donors such as yourself and 100% of the donation goes towards providing for these children. The donation can be as low as $12 which would provide a hot meal for onemonth for one child, or as high as $500 which would provide a scholarship for one student for the year, or anything in between.

Don’t forget to connect with Pomoc Deci on our website and facebook page. If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing the fundraiser with your friends.

Aleksandar, the Best Pupil of his Generation
Aleksandar, the Best Pupil of his Generation

“We have sent you a most recent photo of Aleksandar at our neighbour’s house, since our house has been destroyed in the most recent floods again and our neighbours have offered us a room till we could repair and dry our barn”, Dragoslav, Aleksandar’s Dad wrote in his e-mail sending us the photos of all the awards Aleksandar received at the graduation ceremony. “We can’t begin to tell you how grateful we are for the scholarship for Aleksandar for the last four years, since the first flood disaster! He could have never accomplished this without this support! We are so proud of him, but eternally grateful to you and all the people who donated their money to enable this scholarship”, wrote in his emotional letter, Aleksandar’s Dad.

Aleksandar has just graduated from High School with the Highest Honours and with a national Award for the pupils who not only have 5.0 as general average mark throughout a four-year secondary level education, but have also shown extraordinary success at various national competitions. In addition to that, he has received an award for being a best pupil of his generation in the School.

Four years ago, during the worst flood in the region, their 50-year-old family’s house was completely destroyed. Aleksandar, his sister and parents were literally left homeless. They moved to a barn in which the whole family has lived whilst trying to rebuild the house. Last month, new floods made even the barn impossible to sleep in.

Every single dinar that the family can earn goes to the efforts to make their house inhabitable again. And your donations have made it possible for Aleksandar to have clothes, shoes, text-books and school material to go to school. All his awards have been made possible because of your help!

Thank you for supporting us to help children like Aleksandar!

In just two weeks (on July the 18th), GlobalGiving Foundation is organising a July Bonus Day when donations starting at $100 and up to $1,000 will be matched while $250,000 in matching funds remain. The higher the donation, the higher the match! Please, consider helping us provide scholarships for children like Aleksandar next school year (one full-school-year scholarship for one child is 600 USD or 550 EURO!

Nemanja: "I only wish donors can see my medals..."
Nemanja: "I only wish donors can see my medals..."

When the floods and landslides hit his town Krupanj, Nemanja was in the seventh grade of the elementary school. Although an excellent pupil and a talented young football player, all his extracurricular activities were immediately stopped: he had to help his parents rebuild the house, life and he had no money for anything other than the essentials.

At the time of the floods, only a narrow road divided Nemanja’s family house from the river banks. And when the river bank gave in to the rising water, the whole house was in the water. Even today, Nemanja cannot speak about that night – he was asleep when the water came in, his mother and grandmother just rushed in to make sure he and his sister were safe, but he couldn’t get out of the bed.

The family lost all the crops in the field behind their family house, domestic animals they used to keep drowned in the water...

A year later, they could just barely made the ends meet – his sister was in the last year of the secondary school and was about to go to University and Nemanja was preparing for the secondary school.

With your support and donations, Pomoc deci was able to provide Nemanja with a scholarship.

Today, Nemanja is in the third grade of the secondary school, still has all excellent grades and his sister is finishing her University studies in Mathematics. And that’s not all to it. Nemanja is playing football again in a local club and is practising karate. Recently, he has won two medals at a local competition.

“None of this could I do without my scholarship! My parents let me use the scholarship only for my needs – I have paid for my books and other necessities for this school year, have bought all the needed stuff – kimono and everything else for karate and have managed to pay for my trip to the competition. I only wish the people who have given the money that goes into my scholarship can see my medals and feel how much I am grateful”, shyly comments Nemanja.

Please, help us continue helping these children fulfil their ambition to achieve as much as they can!

"I can drive all these machines", boasts Petar
"I can drive all these machines", boasts Petar

Petar M. was only thirteen when he watched the whole house with everything in it, all the sheep and cows that his family had, all of it, just disappear in front of his eyes in a split second under the landslide during the floods. Luckily, he, his mom, grandma and a year-younger brother managed to save their lives. They ran uphill to the neighbours’ house. His Dad was 130km away working as a carpenter and couldn’t help the family that night.

For a long while, the neighbours were sharing their beds, food, clothes, all the necessities with Petar and his family. Then, with the material from the donations and State assistance, they built a new home, in a village some 30km uphill from the town of Krupanj and the river. The family rented some land and started growing fruits and vegetables. With his Dad far away, Petar became the oldest “man” in the house and took upon himself most of the field work in addition to going to school and getting all the good grades. “And I can drive all the machines in the field except for combine”, proudly adds, now 16-year old Petar, pointing to the agricultural machines in the field.

His mom, Snezana, smiles warmly whilst watching him but is very clear about the priorities at home: "There is a lot of work to be done both in and outside the house, but for the boys the school is the most important thing. They need to be educated, even if they choose to stay home and deal with agriculture."

With your help, we have been providing Petar with the scholarship which he uses for the bus ticket to the High School in the town where he has just started his second grade, for internet bills and all the books and material he can find related to mathematics. Yes, maths is his favourite subject. And not only that, with the scholarship money he has enrolled into the Archimedes Club and is successfully competing with young people from all over the country.

Thank you so much for helping us support Petar and his family! They wouldn’t have been able to send Petar and his brother to the secondary schools in the town, Petar wouldn’t have been pursuing his interests and dreams.

Please, help us continue bringing smiles to this children’s faces and support their education!
