In Shivrajpur Block of Kanpur, the Food security Problems are intensified because the farmers tend to be small/ landless laborers. Any natural calamity or unforeseen situation can reduce them to miserable & reduced situations. This vulnerability is due to their incapacity to store grains beyond harvest trapping them in a vicious cycle of starvation, debt, & poverty during his lean season. Our project aims to support retaining capacity with low-cost Storage Bins.
In Uttar Pradesh which is the heartland of India, food security issue is intensified because farmers tend to be marginal and small/ landless agricultural laborers. Any natural calamity or unforeseen situation such as death, medical emergencies can reduce rural families to a circumstance where they cannot ensure two square meals for themselves. The challenge is to mitigate this trap-cycle by empowering the carrying capacity with storage bins.
The sustainable solution we propose is to support the local storage capacity of farmers so that they are able to store their produce of 500 kilos for the lean seasons. Our project aims to support the retaining capacity of Organic Farmers through storage bins that cost Rs.2000 (USD 35). To ensure beneficiary buy-in from the farmer, 50 percent of the cost will be borne by the farmers themselves.
We want to empower the farmer so he can improve his situation and escape the impoverished-starved image that has become his standard portrayal in the mainstream. In our opinion, the producer who grows the food should not be in doubts about whether he can get his meals from. This low-cost Storage Bin solution including his contribution will create more ownership and empowering impact.
