Supporting Poor Families Affected by HIV/AIDS

by Grassroots Empowerment Initiative (GEMINI)

Hi friends!!

With a grant from the government, GEMINI was able to reach out to vulnerable youth in 2 slum areas with information, free testing for HIV and other reading materials about HIV. The events were meant to strengthen their decision-making skills and enable them make informed choices.

"I'm glad you people came to this place. We have had so many cases of STDs being reported and with your intervention, we feel the youth will be able to be more careful in making sexual choices," said Petronilla, a local nurse, who was part of the organizing team.

The campaign that will run till end of June, will seek to distribute over 2,000 free condoms, provide counseling to an estimated 7000 youth and provide additional reading materials providing referrals and answering additional information.

"We will be empowering more young people in the coming weeks, strengthening their ability to avoid risky behaviour and linking them with existing services," said Stella, GEMINI Director.

GEMINI would like to extend a heartfelt appreciation to all the friends who have continued to support our work. We will keep you in our prayers and do everything to ensure that you are well-informed of all our progress.

We always look forward to receiving feedback, comments and criticism from each of you. Oh, and the donations, too!

Before the introduction of ARV drugs in Kenya, contracting HIV was considered a death sentence. This is slowly changing but the stigma still remains as strong.

Many of our beneficiaries have undergone the full cycle. Kindly share a rare moment with one of our beneficiaries, Abel, a very creative and talented peer educator.

We are so proud of him!

With only US$14,000, ATM was able to directly reach over 5,200 beneficiaries! This means that each person utilized only $2.5. Our cost effective programs have continued to attract the support of well-wishers and as we enter the festive seasons, we hope that more people will team up with us in bringing a smile of hope to the faces of orphans, widows and peasant community members.

This current report details how donations through GlobaGiving were utilized and how many people benefitted and the impact. Enjoy, and thanks!

ATM has seen a lot of goodwill from both donors and the local community. We managed to reach more people than we have ever done and this year saw an increase in our visibility in the community after winning several awards in a recent competition (see previous progress report).

This report shows some of our activities over the past year and the number of clients served. As usual, we wish to thank all of you who stood by us and who showed confidence in our ability to effect change in our community. Thank you!
