NEW SCHOLARSHIP BENEFICIARIES
Over the reporting period and with funds from GlobalGiving, Pathfinder International has chosen three new girls to be beneficiaries of our scholarship program in Ethiopia. Below, please find brief profiles for the three girls who were selected in February 2012.
1. KASU TESHOME
Kasu Teshome was born in Amhara region Lalibel, Bugna woreda. She is 15 years old and a 7th grade student. Kasu has three sisters and two brothers. Her father died when she was young and her mother was no longer able to support her. As a result, she came to Addis to live with her uncle. Her uncle has three children and is divorced. He runs a small business, but it is hard to support such a large family with his limited income.
Thus, life became very difficult for Kasu and she was on the verge of dropping out of school. Taking her problem into consideration, her school teachers and director recommended that she receive a Global Giving scholarship. She was very pleased to receive a Global Giving scholarship and she is now motivated to continue her education.
2. HILINA G. YOHANES
Hilina G. Yohanes was born in Addis Ababa, Lideta sub-city, Woreda 4. She is 14 years old and in the 7th grade. She has 2 sisters. Unfortunately, her father who was a government employee died suddenly. As a result of his death, the whole family was left without support and life became difficult. Her mother was unable to properly feed and support her family. Thus, the sub-city women’s association, realizing their problem, recommended Hilina for Global Giving scholarship support. At present, she is provided with the scholarship. She is now able to properly attend her education and she is very grateful for the scholarship. Hilina said, “I am very lucky for getting this great support. I am inspired; it gives me a courage and great confidence to reach my dream.”
3. ADDIS ALEM MULUGETA
Addis Alem Mulugeta was born in Addis Ababa, sub-city of Addis Ketema, Woreda 3. She is 15 years old and has four sisters. Her mother died suddenly from high blood pressure and life soon become difficult for her and her sisters. As a result, Addis Alem was unable to attend school. Therefore, considering the family’s troubles, the Addis Ababa sub-city women’s association’s executive members recommended that at least one of the girls from the family continue school through a Global Giving scholarship support. Addis Alem was selected to receive the scholarship. Now she will be able to continue her education.
