Making schools in Ghana more girl-friendly

On February 14, 2011, a Valentine’s Day sensitization program was held with the staff and students of Maamobi Prisons Junior Secondary School. The discussion was on what love is and is not, the history of valentine’s day, the myth about the day such as a day to engage in sexual activities, going on drinking sprees, exchanging expensive gifts even to the extent of stealing from parents and how to stay safe on valentine’s day.

This was linked to the type of abuses that exist, the effect and the help available. A total of eighty seven (87) students and six (6) teachers were reached.

The day was chosen because a lot of abuses happen on this day especially among the youth so; we sought to alert and raise the red flag on this day among the students in an effort to minimize the incidence of abuses recorded on this day.

Some of the results of Valentine’s Day misconceptions discussed were;

• unplanned pregnancy
• Contracting sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, syphilis and or HIV/AIDS etc.
• Getting raped or defiled etc.  

WISE has reached out to a total of Seven thousand one hundred and fifty two (7,152) students and fifty-seven (57) teaching staff since the commencement of the program.

During this year’s Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign, a highly interactive two (2) hour outreach program was held with the students and teachers of Millenium Presbyterian School in Kodjonya community in the Lower Manya Krobo District, Eastern Region.  A total of one hundred and ninety-seven (197) students and ten (10) teachers were reached.

Radio Ada and the Daily Graphic, two media houses present selected and interviewed some of the students on the topics discussed. Fliers were distributed to students and staff at the end of the programme. 

Some of the interesting questions asked by the students were;

1)    Is it morally right for a child to report the father’s infidelity to the mother?

2)   Is WISE the only organization that deals with domestic violence issues?

WISE reached out to a total of Nine hundred and twenty-seven (927) in 2010 bringing the number to Seven thousand and sixty-five (7,065) students and fifty-one (51) teaching staff since the commencement of the program.
