Wildlife surveys in the Kimberley
By Nikita Binetti | Development Associate - Annual Programs
Thank you for being a supporter of Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s (AWC) conservation efforts in the Kimberley. It has been over a year now since Mornington-Marion Downs Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the heart of the Kimberley, was washed out in the heavy rainfall from ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie. The largest flood event on record forced staff and visiting researchers to evacuate by helicopter as river levels rose and backfilled onto Mornington’s operations base – personal belongings, equipment, and years of herbarium specimens floated away in the downpour. Your contribution to AWC’s conservation efforts in the Kimberley has been essential in recovery after this catastrophic event.
In the attached report, learn about how GIS mapping is helping to guide Mornington restoration, and the wildlife surveys that are capturing important data on Northern Quolls, Golden Bandicoots, Masked Owls and Black Grasswrens. Thank you for contributing to this critical work.

Your support: Kimberley conservation
By Nikita Binetti | Development Associate - Annual Programs
Thank you for being a supporter of Australian Wildlife Conservancy’s (AWC) conservation efforts in the Kimberley. It has been over a year now since Mornington-Marion Downs Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the heart of the Kimberley, was washed out in the heavy rainfall from ex-Tropical Cyclone Ellie.
Sanctuary Manager, Stella Thomas, estimated that 95% of the sanctuary’s operations base was affected – the infrastructure of which was completely destroyed, leaving only four houses and a single workshop as a foundation for the mammoth recovery effort ahead. Your contribution to AWC’s conservation efforts in the Kimberley has been essential in this recovery.
Since the catastrophic event, the AWC team has worked tirelessly to return to business as usual on site. The attached report holds some exciting updates from the field, as research and monitoring recommences, thanks to your support over the last year.

Support conservation efforts in the Kimberley
By Nikita Binetti | Development Associate - Annual Programs
Thank you for supporting this project, and helping Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC)'s conservation efforts in the Kimberley.
Your contribution has aided in a mammoth recovery effort in 2023, after devastating floods from ex-tropical Cyclone Ellie in January. 95% of the Mornington Marion-Downs Wildlife Sanctuary was inundated at the beginning of last year, and AWC staff have been hard at work to re-establish essential living facilities, and to continue critical conservation work. This work is essential in ensuring the longevity of iconic and threatened species in this special part of Australia - and it cannot be done without you.
Please find attached an in-depth report of the recovery effort from the last year. I hope that you enjoy the read, and would like to acknowledge that this work has only been made possible through your contribution.
If you would ever like to learn more about the work you have helped to support, or how you can continue supporting our ongoing Kimberley conservation efforts, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
