Rainy season and vacation are over in Sara, which like the rest of Burkina Faso is settling back into the schooltime routine. The beginning of the school year is always a busy time for the libraries, as everyone has returned from the fields and has time to read. In Sara, the number of subscriptions, books checked out and library visitors increased dramatically for October over the last three months of the rainy season. The librarian in Sara, Lucie, has taken advantage of the wave of visitors to hold activities for kids in the afternoons and on the weekends. For example, one Thursday afternoon, she read the story of Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves. She used the exercise to encourage critical thinking and creativity skills by stopping the story before the end and asking the kids what they thought would happen next. Lucie said, "I chose this story because the children like stories where the bad guys are punished, and especially that are full of suspense." In addition to the story time, Lucie organized game and puzzle contests and drawing times. She said that she had many participants at each activity and looks forward to holding more now that the kids are back in school.
