We are closing the project for the village library of Sara. With the funds raised from GlobalGiving and other generous donations, we have been able to furnish the library with 1,800 books in French, English, Arabic and local languages.

The village library in Sara has been up and running since 2005. Patrons are frequently found at the library, perusing the ample selection of books by both African and French authors. In 2011, the library had 174 new registrations, 1,699 books checked out and 4,954 visitors! The success continues in 2012, and in January, there were 13 new registrations, 183 books checked out and 503 visitors. This would not be possible without the donations from sources like GlobalGiving that provide books to libraries like that in Sara! Many of the patrons of the library are primary and secondary school children. The librarian, Lucie, holds weekly activities such as story times and drawing sessions. In July 2011, a reading camp was held at the library for fourth grade students from the local elementary school. 25 kids participated in the week-long program that focused on improving their reading skills. At the beginning of the week, some kids could not even read the alphabet. By the end, each of them could successfully read a short text aloud to their fellow campers. 2011 has been a very successful year for the village of Sara.

We'd like to thank all the generous donors who have helped us create a such a popular and integral cultural and informational center in this tiny Burkinabè village. If you are interested in further donating to a FAVL project, we have project to supply a series of graphic novels from Côte d'Ivoire to each of our libraries and to have reading camps for 25 students to improve their reading skills in the months of July, August and September 2012.
