A FAVL summer reading camp was held in Dohoun from August 1 to August 6 with 25 CM1 (fourth grade) students from the village. The animators consisted of a group of primary school teachers, the librarian and two Peace Corps volunteers. The camp focused on improving the reading skills of the students as they pass into CM2 in the upcoming school year and then take the entrance exam to enter into middle school. There was a special emphasis on health-related topics: malaria, HIV/AIDS, and maternal health. Two books were obtained for each library via a grant for the topics of HIV/AIDS and maternal health. The camp also included daily sessions for singing, exercise, and creative projects. The animators and participants all enjoyed their time at the camp in Dohoun and hope to be able to repeat the activity in 2012.
