This project address the largest non-food emergency appeal in Ethiopia, since the 2015/16 drought, NoPReF will lead an emergency community-based holistic intervention to address drought-affected areas and to save lives in communities at risk in the Shebelle zone of the Somali Region. The proposed program first and foremost will rehabilitate and maintain current water sources that are not functional due to drought, and construct sanitary latrines in Gode and Adadle districts of Shebelle zone.
The water and sanitation problems in Somali regional State are massive. Access to reliable water supplies and adequate sanitation facilities in the region is among the country lowest and the need for improvement is acute. Besides, poor access to safe drinking water, lack of adequate sanitation facilities, and poor hygiene practices continue to pose major threats to millions of Somalis in Ethiopia, and also impacts their nutrition status.
To address the threat of waterborne diseases NoPReF, through the emergency intervention program in the Somali Region, will improve the health standard of poor women and children through immediate rehabilitation of 10 unprotected traditional shallow wells serving approximately 4500 people in Gode & Adadle districts. Construct 20 pit latrines where shallow wells are rehabilitated and provision of Hygiene and sanitation training to affected communities. Distribute water storage containers to HHs.
The program will improve the health of 4500 beneficiaries through hygiene and sanitation training. In order to have the greatest impact on human health, the program team will implement the following activities to improve sanitation and hygiene at the household level. - Repair existing shallow wells so that the water inside is cleaner - Construct pit latrine for affected communities so that the communities will stop open defecation hence improve household sanitary issues
