Summary

We regenerate land by planting forests of native species of which 95% were destroyed due to human pressure. Such species are resilient to a changing climate and will be invaluable for preserving biodiversity and recharging aquifers. They also support local wildlife such as insects, birds and mammals. 15000 plants of over 100 species will be planted and protected on 15 acres of degraded land over a period of 8 years. These forests are planted using natural succession techniques.

Challenge

In Tamil Nadu, 95% of the native forest has disappeared due to human action leading to degradation of the land and loss of locally resilient biodiversity. Due to this, every year the rain is unable to percolate effectively into the ground resulting in runoff which paints the sea red from the scale of the eroded soil and subsequently aquifers are not being recharged. Water security in the region is becoming a serious issue. Forests are the most efficient controllers of erosion and percolation.

Solution

Reforestation will be carried out with species obtained from patches of precariously preserved areas (mainly temple groves) in India. This will ensure that the flora is collected before it disappears. These species are the most resilient to local environmental conditions. We work with people with over 50 years of experience in this. The reforestation effort will ensure that the water that falls in the area as rain percolates into the soil and recharges aquifers instead of flowing into the sea.

Long-Term Impact

Building on reforestation in the region will ensure that soil erosion and run-off is controlled, securing water for 35k people. With the species selected and succession of the plantings, the area will be the biggest repository of native species (over 900) of the region and, when connected to other similar plots, will result in the only potential example of what the original forests looked like. These will be the most resilient to a changing climate and so will continue to proliferate naturally.
