Challenge

Survivors of torture and extreme human cruelty experience acute symptoms of psychological trauma including: fundamental loss of trust, a reduced sense of autonomy (independence) and agency (decision making), profound emotional withdrawal, self-hatred, anxiety, flashbacks, panic attacks and suicidal ideation. Survivors also suffer severe trauma-induced physical illness and injury. Survivors face long arduous legal processes and are extremely isolated, marginalised and at risk of re-victimisation.

Solution

The Helen Bamber Foundation helps survivors by delivering specialist psychotherapy & counselling to address psychological trauma combined with physical rehabilitation activities including osteopathy & yoga to manage pain & rebuild strength. Alongside clinical work, we provide legal protection & housing/welfare casework to help clients stay safe & creative art groups to develop social integration, we are often the only support available to some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.

Long-Term Impact

Each year, the Helen Bamber Foundation supports more than 1,200 survivors of torture and extreme human cruelty to work towards sustained recovery. Our clients include men, women and families who have been trafficked or fled to the UK from all over the world including Syria, Albania, Nigeria, Vietnam & Sri Lanka. Our treatments help clients to gain control over their bodies and the lives, confront and overcome the trauma they have suffered & enables them to have a successful and fulfilling future
