Look Good Feel Better is the only international support charity dedicated to providing practical, effective programmes to help New Zealanders manage the visible side effects that cancer and its treatment can have on their appearance. Classes aim to improve confidence, self-esteem and well -being. They are an opportunity to relax, do something practical, and connect with people who may be experiencing something similar.
Every day 60 people in NZ will be diagnosed with cancer. Our programme supports patients who may be struggling with the visible side effects of cancer and its treatment such as changes to skin, loss of eyebrows, lashes and hair. Self-esteem and confidence are an important part of helping people facing their cancer journey in a more positive way. International research reports that 81% of women with cancer felt that the visible side effects suffered had a negative impact on their confidence.
Our aim is to improve confidence, self-esteem, a more positive attitude and a sense of normality at time that is anything but normal. As one of our participants said - "It's not about vanity, it's about normality." . Our local classes are free, and provide an experience for participants to gain control and normality at a time when treatment may have taken over their lives.
Feedback shows that participants leave a workshop feeling well cared for, equipped to help minimise the visible side effects that their diagnosis and treatment has left them with. In one recent study 2000 LGFB beneficiaries were surveyed, and the results established that : 98% said it was positive spending time with others in the same situation 97% felt supported being in a group environment 97% felt confidence and strengthened self-esteem helped towards a positive outlook during treatmt
