The Democratic Republic of Congo has a long history of hosting refugees but a big number of people came from the period of 1958-1959, the period of 1964-1965, the period of 1975-1976, the period of 1990-1993, the period of 1994-up to now and then 2015. These refugees are mainly from Rwanda and Burundi and live with the host communities but they all not identified and this exposes them to vulnerability and lack of opportunities, to access land and other economic opportunities in order to survive.
The Democratic Republic of Congo has a long history of hosting refugees, in 1994 the whole Rwanda came in after the genocide. As per now we do not have a clear number of refugees in DRCongo but we do estimate them at around 4millions in all the former 11 provinces. Since 1996 up to now they lost international protection and they are now living on their own with all the consequences about massive violations of their rights. This project will focus on identifying each refugee.
This project seeks to promote the protection of refugees in DRCongo, by creating visibility about all places where refugees and asylum seekers are living in DRC, identify each refugee, issue Refugee Card to each person, advocate for specific refugee settlements and lobby for humanitarian relief aid for them mainly (food, descent shelter, education, health services and the promotion of income generating activities).
This project will foster peace in the Great Lakes, will reduce tensions between Rwanda and DRC over refugee issues, will now favor debate on durable solutions to refugees and explore long-term economic and social opportunities for refugees to live a normal life in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It will position refugees as stakeholders in the development of the country and empower to play roles in solving communities problems as important human resource.
