Summary

The Afya Foundation has strong linkages with many communities across the globe in dire need of medical supplies for its aging residents. The materials donated, after a loved one has passed away or recovered from an accident, can give a second life to these supplies to improve the quality of life for the elderly poor abroad while preventing the devastating environmental impact of simply discarding them. Help us donate hundreds of wheelchairs, walkers, commodes and more to change and save lives.

Challenge

Medical supplies and equipment are a critical component of any healthcare system and lack of supplies results in poor health outcomes. 3 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants have fled to neighboring countries in the Americas and more continue to seek refuge. An increase in families, the elderly and individuals with disabilities making the journey means they often need supplies and support upon arriving in host countries where resources are stretched thin and hospitals are overcrowded.

Solution

In resource poor nations, older adults are amongst the most marginalized populations (with greatest attention often attributed to maternal and infant health). This project will match older adults who have significant disability and frailty to products that will aid in walking, functioning and living safely. The multi-country distribution plan ensures that elders in need who are residing in resource strained host countries will receive the supplies desperately needed.

Long-Term Impact

Host countries may face a long-term need for eldercare supplies as Venezuelan exodus continues. The long-term impact of promoting safety and function for older adults is significant and has impact on the entire family providing care. When families no longer need these supplies, they tend to share them with neighbors and others in need. In addition, the supplies are collected from those who received home care in the US. Distributing them abroad reduces wasteful and unnecessary behavior.
