Girls Inc of Long Island finished 2010 with touching the lives of at least 500 girls and continues to present programming for girls in 2011. Last year we predominatly presented the "Money Talks" program to girls 9 years old through 18 years old and introduced the "Friendly PEERsuasion program to girls 11 years old and up. In the "Friendly PEERsuasion" program girls develop skills to resist pressure to use harmful substances. The program begins by helping girls deal with the influences of peers. Participants build communication skills, recognize stress, and respond to stress in healthy ways: three abilities that form the basis upon which decision making and resistance skills are built. Girls learn about tobacco, alcohol, prescription and over-the-counter medications, dietary supplements including "natural treatments" and illicit drugs. They analyze media messages, including advertizing, the glamorize substance use. This program and the "Money Talks" program are helping Long Island girls to become strong, smart and bold. If you know of girls that can benefit from these programs please feel free to contact us and with your generous support Girls Inc.og Long Island continues to help our community.
