Service Scholarships

By Dr. Henry Cunningham | General Director

International Friends of Belize IFOB granted four service scholarships to students at Toledo Community College in Belize, Central America for the 2008-2009 school year. The purpose of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to deserving students who have an interest in serving their community.

The recipients of these scholarships and their community programs are Devon Paulino who is helping with remedial classes in his school; Lashawn Audinette who's project is to serve at the community hospital; Lisa Garnett assists at the school’s computer lab helping the primary school students, and Alvin Chavarria has chosen to help primary school students do research at the St. Peter Claver library as his service project.

All four students are doing outstanding work in both their service projects and in their academic work. Devon Paulino is busy in the library. In an e-mail, Devon said, “I just want to thank you for assisting me with my secondary education. I just want to express my gratitude. The primary school students I am assisting have excelled and their parents are amazed. I am planning to do more work with a primary school teacher to help her with evening classes that are given to the students. I help them (Younger students) with reading and drill them with multiplication cards and help them with math assignments.”

Lashawn Audinette in his e-mail said, “The students and the community has have a positive impact on me because I have learnt many things even from primary school students. Mostly me but my family is very supportive of everything I do, especially my mom.”

The third scholarship recipients Lisa Garnett in introducing herself as “One who has received one of your prestigious Scholarships. I am hereby expressing my feeling about how I am very thankful with what you are doing to help me accomplish my dreams to complete my secondary education.”

In sharing about his experience conducting his service project and his academic work, Alvin Chavarria stated, “I have embarked on tutoring 2 students from my biology class. I tutor them in biology during school games and at break or lunch. I am planning to start helping in the library in the near future. I have done well in my first semester and I am planning to do much better in the second semester.”
