The community service scholarship program will be offered in the Toledo district of Belize. The purpose of this scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to deserving students who have an interest in serving their community. International Friends of Belize hopes to promote civic engagement among students and an interest in serving others. Recipients of the scholarships will be asked to perform 5 hours of community service per week for a total of 20 hours per month. Service projects could include tutoring, volunteering at the hospital, library or clinic or assisting community elders. The scholarship committee has developed the community service concept, criteria and timeline and has publicized the program in the Toledo district. Letters have been sent to the Principals of the two schools in the district and once we have received a letter confirming their desire to participate in this program, applications will be made available for students who are interested in participating in the program. The scholarship committee is very excited about this new scholarship program and looks forward to funding deserving students in the Toledo district.
