Help VOTB Keep the School in La Tirana Open!

by Voices on the Border

The youth in La Tirana need your help to stay in school. Last year, we funded a teacher for grades 7-9 to the local elementary school so that the youth no longer had travel 1.5 hours through violent areas to get to school. Funding this teacher invests in the future of La Tirana, but also meets immediate needs- keeping youth in school so they are busy and productive, and not getting caught up in the violence sweeping the country. Now, we need your help to fund the teacher for another year!

In 2014, violence in the Bajo Lempa region of Jiquilisco, Usulutan made it too dangerous for youth in La Tirana to make the perilous 1.5 hour trek through gang-controlled areas to middle school. In 2015, Voices met with parents, local leaders, and the Ministry of Education to figure out how to keep the youth safe and in school. The Ministry said that if Voices paid for a teacher and parents enrolled their children, they would certify grades 7-9 at the elementary school in La Tirana.

Last year Voices paid for a teacher and it was a huge success. Eighteen students enrolled and in addition to studying every morning, the youth launched a literacy program and taught adults to read in the afternoon. The program was such a big success that the community wants to extend it through 2016. Keeping youth in school and engaged in positive activities is vital for keeping them safe from the influence of gangs and violence.

Long-Term Impact

In addition to keeping youth safe from violence, this program ensures that all of the youth in La Tirana receive the training they need to become strong community leaders in the near future. Voices and community leaders are partnering with the teacher to ensure the youth are getting leadership and technical skills so they can continue making positive contributions.
