Children  Uganda Project #32505

Sponsor a child to go to pre-school in Uganda

by Centre for Youth Driven Development Initiatives Vetted since 2013 Site Visit Verified

At a community meeting in July 2016 the local residents of Ndazabazadde voiced their concerns about the number of pre-school and school-age children who aren't accessing education. In response CFYDDI founded an Early Childhood Development Programme. CFYDDI provide the teachers, learning space and educational materials and is now supporting over 70 children, most of whom attend for free. The demand for the programme is increasing and we are seeking scholarships to sustain the project.

Pre-school care is an expensive venture yet very vital for child development below 5 and although primary education should be free there are numerous costs which make it prohibitively expensive for families. The reasons they cannot afford to pay for education are many: some parents are unemployed, others have died and so the child remains in the care of the grandparents who live in poverty, or they may be the children of teenage mothers who have been forced to drop out of school and do not work.

The Early Childhood Development Programme at CFYDDI was launched in July 2016 and since then has grown immensely. There are currently over 70 students learning how to play, write, read, and create with the support of six full-time teachers. The majority pay no fees, whilst others contribute a small amount. We need sponsorship for these students to sustain the project, provide additional resources, and to provide free lunches. A regular donation, no matter the size, will have a huge impact.

Long-Term Impact

Since 2016 some of our students should have graduated to primary school but they remain in the programme due to poverty. The local government and community are so impressed with our work that they want CFYDDI to build a primary school. This means that as pupils graduate they will move to our registered, accredited school and continue to learn. This will continue having a huge impact on the household as by providing supervision for the children their mothers can now go out to work
