The organization's two core programmes are Residential Care; and the Therapeutic Treatment Centre. The Residential Care programme can cater for up to 90 children and currently has 70 children in its care (21 of whom are HIV positive), who have been placed at Epworth by the courts because they have been neglected, abused or abandoned. In order to prevent family disintegration, Epworth's Therapeutic Treatment Centre (Therapy and Assessment Centre) provides therapeutic services to everyone.
Exposure to neglect and abuse leads to failure to reach developmental milestones. Meeting holistic developmental needs of the children would enable them to become self-sufficient beings and reduce dependency on the welfare system. We are assisting the children and their immediate families to build solutions to the challenges they experience whilst tapping into their inner personal resources. Poverty is at the heart of the challenges being experienced by people in our local community.
The project will identify the individual needs of each of the children and their family and devise a practical program that corrects the imbalance created by the self-destructive behaviors. This program will involve a multi-disciplinary team of professionals of all fields. Some of the strategies may include parent training, development of a daily routine programme for the child to follow, assessment of psychological, emotional and cognitive abilities, placement into an appropriate facility.
This programme will need continuous monitoring and evaluation as it is quite easy for people to relapse and go back to their old behavior. However, will educate and capacitate 50 parents and their respective children with behavioral challenges. The focus will not only be on correcting the negative behave but also on empowering the affected parents and children to cope better future challenges.
