Through this project, we aim to set up a Youth Resource Center- which will have basic tools and equipments, where hundreds of unemployed youth in Malava can learn how to make the solar lamps, but also make various other 'JuaKali' (metal/woood products) for sale and earn a living.
This will be our 2nd sich project- which is in line with our policy to decentralize from Nairobi- in order to create more opportunities. Our first similar project will commence in Febrauary 2011 in Manyatta Slum in Kisumu- which is funded by UN HABITAT.
From December 20th till December 28th 2010, the Executive Director, Evans Wadongo visited the proposed project area. He interacted with people in the various villages to determine the best way to implement the project.
In January 2011, Kennecy Alwanda, the Programs Director, led a team of volunteers in carrying out a site survey. Through the survey, we have identified several ideal location where we shall set up the workshop. We have also analysed the direct and in direct beneficiaries of the project. We also analysed the level of skills among youth in the area as well as income levels for families within the area.
This project is anticipated significantly reduce poverty and improve education and health.
The project implementation will commence in March/April 2011.
