Solar for Internally Displaced Persons Camp (Solar for IDP Camp) is an initiative of GIFSEP; It is aimed at powering all IDP Camps in Nigeria with Solar. The insurgency and communal crises have displaced about 2 Million people who are taking shelter in Internally Displaced Persons Camp in different parts of the country and nearly all the camps are without electricity. Our goal is to provide clean energy access using solar kits to at least 5000 shelters providing power to at least 50,000 people
Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons Camp houses over 39,000 people, and 4000 shelter it is the 2nd largest camp of internally Displaced persons in Africa after the Dalori camp. During our visit to the camp we discovered that the Camps have no electricity, the only available Energy source options for households in the camps are often limited to consuming firewood and biomass.
We will solve this problem by providing clean energy access to all by lighting up the IDP camps with Solar. We will also train the beneficiaries with skills on installation and maintenance of home solar systems. We have so far powered 500 shelters at the camp with solar
The project will improve the living standard of the people by providing clean energy access, improvement in the health condition of the people the reduction of indoor air pollution. The project will strengthen the capacities of the local actors to become solar technicians and serve as means of employment.
