This project will look into formal and informal support systems for individuals living in poverty in Jinja and Kampala, Uganda and explore who is considered vulnerable, what the social protection system offers for poverty prevention and alleviation, and generate a framework for approaching Ugandan social protection systems with cultural competence.
Like many countries, Uganda has social protection services to prevent and alleviate poverty. I plan to explore non-governmental supports including Clemency Uganda, Uganda Development and Health Associates, FABIO, WORI, and others in addition to governmental, generally monetary, supports in order to understand the cultural means of poverty prevention and alleviation.
This project does not aim to solve the problem. This research is exploratory and intended not to solve the problem, but to understand Jinja and Kampala's social protection agencies to help those in or at risk of poverty and allow me to gain experience in international research.
The goals of this project are more long-term than immediate. As I currently am unfamiliar with the social protection strategies in Jinja beyond the research I have done from home, I am not in a position to "fix" anything there. However, this project aims to generate a framework for understanding how to look at these social protection programs which will be more sustainable long-term than immediately attempting to solve poverty in Jinja.
