Sierra Club Inner City Outings Youth Program

by Sierra Club Angeles Chapter

Summary

Well-trained Sierra Club leaders take inner city youth on field trips to experience first hand California's parks, mountains, and beaches through day hikes, camping, snow trips, and tide pool outings, often for the first time. The all-volunteer organization provides outdoor experiences for about 70 schools and agencies serving LA's neediest children - those who might not learn to appreciate the wilderness without us. Such trips instill a love of nature that inspires future environmentalists.

Challenge

For many inner city youth, this program provides opportunity to enjoy outdoor areas that they would never see otherwise. A love for nature develops with every wilderness adventure.

Solution

Inner city youth learn how to explore and enjoy nature with friendships that last a lifetime. This direct connection with nature can inform future voters, stakeholders, and officials about environmental policies.

Long-Term Impact

The program serves 4000 youngsters every year in Los Angeles. Great experiences as youngsters inspire adults to volunteer as leaders of outings for the next generation of inner city youth.
