Every 20 seconds a child dies from a preventable water-borne illness: that's 1.5 million preventable deaths each year. Shining Hope for Communities' Clean Water Project includes the largest clean water access point in the Kibera slum. It is providing safe drinking water to the Kibera School for Girls, and over 2,000 households in Kibera. Not only are we creating a more stable supply of water for the community, it is also preventing the waterborne illnesses we see everyday at our health clinic.

What is the issue, problem, or challenge?

In Kibera, the scarcity of water, and the poor quality of water available, contributes to an incredible health and sanitation crisis. There is no running water, and to even obtain water residents pay exorbitant rates-two to ten times what Nairobi city residents pay. Water-borne illnesses are a serious threat to the lives of our students: around the world, every 20 seconds a child dies from a water-borne sickness.

How will this project solve this problem?

At Shining Hope for Communities, we are committed to providing an integrated and holistic approach to the water crisis in Kibera. Shining Hope for Communities will provide clean water below the current market price to ensure those who need water most will have access. The Clean Water Project will grow over the next year to serve more families as community distribution methods are implemented.

Potential Long Term Impact

Contributions will support the operation of the water tower including proper treatment to prevent waterborne illnesses, community distribution methods to increase local access, as well as the development of community educational programs promoting sanitation and safe hygiene practices.
