Shepherd dogs are the most important measure for the livestock breeders to protect their flock from bears and wolves. In Greece the breeders do not receive subsidies for the acquisition and raise of a shepherd dog. So Callisto founded a Shepherd Dogs Network to donate puppies to breeders that face losses from large carnivores. This way the network contributes to the conservation of the Greek shepherd dog breeds and protects the large carnivores by improving their coexistence with the farmers.
Livestock breeders in Greece face daily the danger of losses in their flock from bears and wolves. This sometimes can lead to extreme illegal measures that hurt wildlife. The solution is to prevent the losses by using Shepherd Dogs for guarding the flock, a proven effective measure. In Greece though, there is no state subsidies for the adoption and raise of a Shepherd Dog. Also, Greek Shepherd Dogs face the danger of extinction as there are not many traditional breeders of the Greek breeds.
Callisto will use your donations to identify breeders who own good quality dogs in order to give their puppies in surplus to breeders who have no dogs or lost them during fights with large carnivores or by poison baits. Callisto undertakes delivery of the puppies & provides veterinary assistance & instructions for the dogs' training. Breeders sign a contract that obliges them to respect the welfare of the dogs, to avoid crossbreeding and to accept donation of their puppies to other breeders.
In a long-term basis, the breeders participating at the Shepherd Dogs Network will face less or no damages. This will help the coexistence between breeders & wildlife, especially with large carnivores. Eventually, there will be less injuries or losses of large carnivores caused by humans, a quite important result for the conservation of wildlife and biodiversity. The network also contributes to the conservation of the three Greek breeds, a quite important issue for the Greek biodiversity.
