Our project will support 150 students who cannot afford the meals and transportation they need to regularly attend school. Our support will help them focus on learning and improve test results.
About 150 of the students at Green Island Primary can afford neither lunch nor transportation to school. Yet these children do not qualify for government anti-poverty support. Due to their irregular attendance their performance on standardised reading and math tests is very poor. Many do not pass literacy tests. Few get into the high school of their choice. These students often start well behind their peers and have a hard time catching up.
Our project will subsidize breakfast, lunch and transportation for the students. By improving the attendance and nutrition of the most vulnerable students we will improve their preparation for high school entrance exams.
Better preparation for secondary level work means more options after high school. More students in well paying jobs, better placed to serve their community. It also means less unemployment and more hope.
