Safe Hands for Girls is working with Medshare to send a 40 foot container of life saving medical supplies to village clinics in the Gambia. There is a huge need for medical supplies in the and women in particular continue to suffer because of lack of access to quality medical care.
There are only 3 major hospitals in a country with a population of 2 million people. Not only does this limit access to healthcare for most Gambians, but these hospitals are also not equipped with the proper medical tools to deliver the necessary care. In some cases, patients come into the hospital and have to buy their own syringes, bandages etc. This coupled with the high poverty rate has led to high maternal, child and overall mortality rates in the country.
The money that will be raised will pay for a 40 foot container full of various medical supplies such as syringes, gloves, bandages, incubators, surgical materials, catheters, blood pressure and blood sugar machines etc. This will allow medical personnel to provide proper healthcare to patients without being limited by lack of resources. This will also help relieve some of the burden from the government so that available funds can be put towards other healthcare needs such as hiring doctors
Access to key medical supplies will enable healthcare providers in The Gambia to treat patients and their various medical conditions. This will lead to a healthier population and in turn greater productivity in The Gambia. Additionally, provision of key labour and delivery supplies will ensure safe and healthy deliveries and postpartum care for mothers and babies thereby ensuring a greater chance of a healthy future for the next generation.
