A pilot program that will bring one artist to China for 2 months. The artist will work with one of The Nest community's social enterprises on a project that uses art to empower disadvantaged youth.
The Nest vision is to foster the development of a more inclusive society where everyone can maximize their potential and play a full and active role in their communities. The artist will play an important role in creating a culture of collaboration and help facilitate the realization of this goal.
The Nest is a new collaboration hub to catalyse social innovation, bringing local people, social enterprises and nonprofits together to tackle social challenges. It's crucial that a strong sense of community is fostered. The Nest must spur creative and innovative thinking to enable positive social impact in the wider community. Without authentic artistic and cultural programs, research shows that communities are not as innovative, tend to be less cohesive and collectively engaged and lack depth.
The Artist Residency pilot program will enable one international artist to get inspired and create in Shanghai, while helping to foster a spirit of culture and community at The Nest. The artist shall co-design an interactive art project with one of our on-site social enterprises such as WABC or PUKI. While working to break down barriers and prejudices and promote social integration through artistic expression, the artist will promote creativity and collaboration, enriching the local community.
The Nest's home at Gongyi Xintiandi will be a showcase of 50+ social enterprises and nonprofits. This network of organizations will help rebuild trust in the social sector in China as it boosts and strengthens the growth of social enterprise. Upon success of this initial pilot program, we plan to open up more artist studios at The Nest to continually link on-site artists with social enterprise projects, promoting international and inter-community exchanges that help accelerate social innovation.
