This project sends at-risk middle school students from underserved urban neighborhoods to a week-long summer enrichment experience - the thinc program. The thinc program focuses on 21st Century student learning outcomes with a specific emphasis on college and career readiness through immersion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Nearly 7,000 teenagers in the U.S. drop out of school every day and according to the Civil Rights Project at Harvard/Urban Institute report high school graduation is a 50/50 proposition for minority students. The dropout indicators become apparent at the middle school level. This project works directly with middle school minority students to demonstrate the connection between success in school and pursuit of a rich variety of career choices.
The thinc program provides students entering seventh, eighth and ninth grades (currently from three partner schools in Harrisburg, PA, Philadelphia, PA and Prince George's County, MD) an intensive, week-long educational experience that exposes them to a variety of career possibilities that match their individual interests. The week includes college visits, daily enrichment classes in the arts and sciences, hands-on technology projects and an ongoing focus on 21st century literacy skills.
The project will impact 200 at-risk students in the next five years inspiring them to think about their future and identifying the positive impact they can have on the world.
