Send A Disadvantaged Woman to Univ in Burkina Faso

by Chance for Change Inc

Chance for Change works to help young women receive a secondary education in one of the world's poorest countries: Burkina Faso. Candidates for aid are proposed by local associations, and selected in consultation with university women's groups. The average grant is about $1,200, but every dollar makes a difference. A donation of just $25 can provide essential school supplies. Beneficiaries' families share in the financial burden to, along with CFC, provide these women with brighter futures.

In Burkina Faso, 80% of people live by subsistence farming. In addition to being one of the world's poorest countries, it is the least literate. With a female youth literacy rate of just 33%, only 18% of all girls participate in secondary education, and only 0.5% of women go to university. One in three girls will be married before they turn 18 - some will be brides at just 11 years old. Chance for Change allows driven young women to beat these odds.

Since 2010, we have sent 36 young women to university, nursing school or teacher training. Three finished their Master's study in 2014; seven more graduated this year, including three from nursing school. The economy of Burkina Faso is developing steadily, and these women will be a part of it.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate young Burkinabe women allowing them to rise out of poverty, which will provide for their families' health and well-being.
