Dear WEP Supporters,

On behalf of WEP, I hope you and your families are doing well during these challenging times.

I particularly wish to thank you for supporting our students and staff. Knowing you care means a great deal to our students – and to all who share the values and efforts of WEP.

Our inspiring and industrious students, who remain at home, have begun tutoring one another online; forming studying groups; and sharing their crafts and poetry via WhatsApp (see photos).

At the same time, we have been working to safely rollout our revised Academy curriculum. Here is an overview:

1. WEP and WEP-India are in discussions with our partners in Madurai, Hyderabad and Kadapa to ensure that they are complying with our COVID-19 policy to re-open safely and legally, which we hope will occur in late summer - early fall.

2. Our Partners are working to implement the changes into the Academy curriculum and to have these ready for the students’ return.  Our Directors, Mrs. Esther Subhashini, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi and Mrs. Sandhya Puchalapalli, who have worked tirelessly since 2005, 2007, and 2012 respectively, to develop unique, highly successful programs, are eager and enthusiastic to work with us to launch the revised Academy.  We anticipate an energized restart.

3. WEP's Kadapa partner, the Aarti Home, which, as a home did not close, has already received the revised guidelines and has begun incorporating them into the Academy, providing a perfect opportunity to test the program.  The staff is providing feedback and (as our model requires) is adding local resources, facilitators, teachers, mentors and materials.

4. Due to the pandemic, we are designing our online version of the Academy.  Our Program Committee has met regularly to develop this effort and assess student feedback. We believe the launch will be in late 2020.

5. A report of WEP's 270 students and alumnae survey to assess their program experience and determine the effectiveness of our 18 years of work, will be published sometime this summer.

Again, thank you again very much for all of your generous support. I wish you all the best and good health.

If you have questions, please contact me at ztimms@womenseducationproject.org

Yours,

Zoë Timms, (Founder), WEP Students, the WEP and WEP-India Board, Council and Staff

Since December 2019, Women's Education Project has held multiple conversations with two potential partner organizations (one in Baroda and a second in Lucknow) to discuss hosting our I Am a Leader Academy.

For both the new partners and our current Centers in Madurai, Hyderabad and Kadapa, WEP is preparing the I Am a Leader Academy 2020, a revised program offering three certificate courses for young underpriviledged women to become economically independent leaders in their own lives.

My SIsterhood Certificate - Trained to become Peer Leaders, students assist with Academy activities, conduct home visits and research, and lead “ripple effect” groups, study groups, book club, sports, crafts, and dance sessions. The Sisterhood builds a supportive community and ensures completion of studies and ambition to pursue higher education or vocational programs.

My Leadership Path - Workshops and discussions on leadership and Gender, Health and Nutrition and Rights.  Students explore 9 topics through exposure trips and interviews. My Leadership Path builds knowledgeable, confidence and curiousity in the topic areas while preparing young women to become leaders aware of their opportunities.

I Am Economically Independent - Courses on financial literacy, communication skills, and basic computers prepares young women to enter formal sector careers of their own choosing.

In April, WEP will begin piloting the Academy and preparing to scale our work through networked organizations.

We look forward to updating you about our launch.

Women’s Education Project’s I Am a Leader Academy is here! Seventeen years in the making, WEP’s unique, holistic, curriculum for women to enter careers of their own choosing - has been given more flexibility to enable - for the first time - its use by NGO’s serving networks of community organizations and thousands of young women, in new and diverse locations.

In October, an Indian-based NGO, providing program to a network of over 30 community organizations supporting girls, approached WEP requesting our program, as the next-step for their own activities. WEP has arranged to pilot two new Centers at this organization in 2020 - installing the WEP Center and enrolling 150 students.

The WEP Center offers young women: 1. a safe place and supportive community - peer learning/study groups, tutorials, libraries, computer labs, and nutritious snacks. 2. The I Am a Leader Academy, a year-long, certificate granting, career guidance curriculum leading to formal sector employment of the students’ choosing.  This vision-expanding experience consists of field trips, workshops, guest speakers, discussions, skills-based courses, internships, training programs and other activities. And 3. the Alumnae Association, a communication platform allowing alumnae to keep-in-touch, network, and access specialized education scholarships and other opportunities. Alumnae are invited to become certified I Am a Leader instructors and mentor new students.

In preparation for this pilot, Directors of WEP's current Centers in Madurai, Hyderabad and Kadapa, which support 350 students and are running pieces of the Academy and Alumnae Assocation, will work with staff to ensure the pilot's success by lending their knowledge and experiences.

It is expected that March of 2020, 100 students of the current Centers and 150 of the pilot, will be enrolled in the I Am a Leader Academy.
