The 09-10 Summer Launch Camp was a great success! Thanks in part to the support of our GlobalGiving donors, we were able to serve around 100 rising 10th grade students at all three of BUILD’s sites (East Palo Alto, Oakland, and Washington, DC).
For the first time, the California Launch Camp was held at an actual campsite! The students enjoyed their overnight stay in great outdoors, and they attended sessions on Business Communications and Time Management, among others. BUILD Metro DC held their inaugural Launch Camp on-site, and they were amazed by the number of students in attendance.
One exercise in which the Metro DC students participated was called My Secret Identity. During this exercise, students used objects, attributes and talents of past and present heroes to describe themselves, as prompted by 10 questions they were given to complete the exercise. Natalee B. responded to the question, “If I were a hero, I would be…“ by saying that she would be the female Gandhi because she wants to create peace amongst different countries and people. This is just one example of the inspiring BUILD students that attended Launch Camp this school year.
But we have another set of Launch Camps coming up in the Summer of 2010! BUILD hopes you will continue to support the work that we do with these amazing students.
