Challenge

100s of self-help groups of varying sizes and capacities have been set up by Kampala's urban poor. Although these groups are working diligently to fill gaps left by the public sector in service delivery, these groups are working in isolation, duplicate efforts, lack visibility and have limited capacity and access to resources. Moreover, there are no special programs run by government to enable these groups to impact communities better.

Solution

NifC provides community groups space for peer learning, information sharing, joint planning and actions and advocacy with and on behalf of groups. Group leaders are provided basic training in targeted issues relevant to group management, program design and implementation. Groups are also taught to collaborate with others to have a unified voice. This project will affect 95 groups to strengthen their competencies, encourage joint planning and be more accountable to their members and communities.

Long-Term Impact

This project will allow groups to adopt good practices, demonstrate more awareness of rights of their members, improve their managerial skills in moderating at meetings, in resolving conflicts among members, do resource mobilization, work with local government and stakeholders. Group leaders will also be able to address stakeholders on specific issues to the local community.
