This story unfolding gradually over the past 4 years shows how slum/informal settlement dwellers leading lives of powerlessness and no voice can be motivated with gentle efforts of UHRC’s social facilitators. With motivation, training to help acquire knowledge of rights and entitlements and continued mentoring helps them develop negotiation skills to effectively negotiate with civic offices. Such incremental strength and sense of power among slum women’s groups enabled them facilitate enhancd access of their families, neighbors to govt. Picture IDs, proof of address and residence and voter cards. They are now able to access government services, schemes and exercise democratic rights.
