Challenge

Youth employment is arguably the greatest challenge facing South Africa with 60.2% of young people unable to find work. There are about 400 000 unemployed youth in the Cape Flats, outside of Cape Town. 69% of youth from low income neighbourhoods live below the food poverty line. Climate change impacts are landing, as seen through the water crises of 2018 and people from low income areas lack the resources and knowledge to grow their resilience to withstand the shocks and stresses as they land.

Solution

We equip 100 unemployed youth per year with the knowledge and hands-on skills of designing and implementing permaculture design at a household and neighbourhood level. Through the program, students work through participatory design and retrofit 16 Mitchells Plain homes and design and implement 16 street systems per year. This grows their confidence as well as the resilience of Mitchells Plain. Through job shadows we connect graduates to livelihood opportunities in the local green economy.

Long-Term Impact

This program aims to graduate 300 young people over three years and implement 96 resilience implementations. We seek to grow the program and poise for national reach - so that the young people of South Africa might be equipped to look after themselves in the face of climate change.
