John Carlin visits Tiempo de Juego
John Carlin visits Tiempo de Juego

"What Tiempo de Juego does is admirable (...) they do things of high value to society, a perfect example of how a community decides to take their future in their hands" John Carlin, Bogotá 2017.

The British journalist, John Carlin, author of the book "The Human Factor" that served as the basis for the film "Invictus" about the South African leader Nelson Mandela, participated in a fascinating discussion on the occasion of the celebration of the eleventh anniversary of Fundación Tiempo de Juego.

On 14th November, Tiempo de Juego run its annual fundraising event. But this was no event like any other they had put together, it has a very special guest. John Carlin narrated in front of an audience of more than two hundred people, captivated by its simplicity and depth, how Mandela managed to negotiate with the General of his country who, with a force of fifty thousand armed men, tried to neutralize him by the use of force so that he would not reach the presidency.

John Carlin highlighted that he has been a witness of many cruel realities where the excess of free time for young people is highly prone to many frequent problems in the context, such as drugs, gangs, early pregnancy, among others. And added that Tiempo de Juego is not only a football school, but a movement that incorporates three essential elements: 1. the "soccer for peace" methodology, as an intentional tool to promote good coexistence, 2. the inclusion of gender and life skills, and 2. the "monitors" model, which promotes the leadership of young people to be the promoters and coordinators of the activities.

Carlin shared with all the audicence aa beautiful lesson in humanity, and  did not spare words of recognition and praise for this beautiful project of social redemption for thousands of children across Colombia, which under the pretext of football has taken them out of violence, gangs and drug addiction, but instead teaching them precisely in values of work and respect for others.

Thank you for making Tiempo de Juego's work a reality every year. With your contribution, we ensure many more children can have a second chance in life.

Peace Leaders from Tiempo de Juego
Peace Leaders from Tiempo de Juego

"Giving civilian victims of war and former guerrillas new responsibilities as ‘Peace Leaders’, allows them to forget what side of the conflict they were on and helps change the way they see themselves and how they are seen by community members." Football is helping ex antagonists of the armed conflict reunite for one same goal: peace.

Together with streetfootballworld, The Ashmore Foundation and German Foreign Office in Colombia, and two other operators, Fundación Tiempo de Juego is training 72 civilian victims and former F.A.R.C guerrillas to conduct football programmes focused on peace and reconciliation.

Colombia is at a challenging post conflict period. One of the mayor challenges of post-conflict is to help the demobilized population to come and live together with victims of the conflict in the same communities. “Football for Peace and Reconciliation” has proven, how through the power of football, we are able to bring the two groups together and engage them in how their reconciliation process can positively affect their whole community. They have seen how they can change their role by stop being recognized as victims or victimizers and become jointly “Peace Leaders” that can work together for their community. One of very few programs in Colombia bringing the two populations together is “Football for Peace and Reconciliation”, according the National Unit of Victims.

Together, despite unimaginable hardships, 72 civilian victims of war, former guerrillas and former paramilitaries were trained as “Peace leaders” bridging their differences to coach more than 5,028 young people in peace and reconciliation methodologies, using football as a tool. Implemented in communities directly affected by the civil war, these programs give young people a much needed safe place to learn and interact. This program is vital to the reintegration of former antagonists and to ensuring that psycho-emotional reconciliation takes place in 6 communities across the country.

  • 72 victims of armed conflict and community leaders have acquired educational and practical techniques to act as "football for peace and reconciliation" trainers. These individuals have developed a new view of their role in society and work to develop their competences as community leaders.
  • 60 of them graduate as Peace Leaders demonstrating through the assessment of their trainers that they have advanced in the building and strengthening of skills for reconciliation and peace.
  • 5,028 children and young people (indirect beneficiaries) from disadvantaged areas acquire life skills through regular participation in sport and cultural activities, that both inhibit the ability of illegal armed groups to recruit them and promote their life-long development.
  • As Peace Leaders start to replicate their learnings in their own communities.
  • 8 Peace Leaders continue to develop football for peace activities in their communities or volunteering for the implementing organizations that hosted them after the pilot project came to an end.
  • Inclusive sport training programs were implemented for victims and reintegrated guerrilla members, which ensure that social issues are addressed in a creative way. With the design of the festival they learn: to improve their views of themselves and others. “The only program in Colombia bringing the two populations together” Participant in kick-off workshop from the Unit of Victims.
  • In six communities across the country "Football for Peace and Reconciliation” take place for children and adolescents. At each festival the football for peace methodology is implemented and safe spaces for fair play and exchange are created. At each festival, families come together and experience the transformative power of football.
  • www.GolYPaz.com platform is created to share knowledge and best practices among implementing partners. Useful for replicating, scaling up and documenting learnings for other countries in post-conflict.

Kids are the most powerful agents of change!
Kids are the most powerful agents of change!

2017 has started great. Indeed, so great we are facing fascinating and exciting challenges already. Last year we've decided we needed to dream big, even bigger than we were already doing so. And thanks to your support and encouragement, dreams are slowly coming true.

This year we have three projects that we are indeed fond of:

  • Soocer is conquering new fronteers and our kids are being its embassadors. We're strenghtening our soccer activities in the two second chapters, Santa Marta and Timbiquí, by promoting exchanges between our youth leaders who travel from one chapter to the other learning and teaching.
  • We're running the third edition of our 5K to promote healthy habits and the development of our sports activities that, in 2016, attended more than 1600 children.
  • Our team is tansfering its knowledge on sports for development into juvenile centers for women, with the support of our organizations who are also attending psychologically the families of these youth.

We promise to keep you in teach, because what's ahead is as exciting as what's already happening. We're still dreaming big, as we believe in the power of conviction and dreams. We hope you continue supporting the boys, girls and youth from Colombia on their pursuit of happiness and a prosperous future!

Join us for a mind-blowing 2017!

Some of our achievements!
Some of our achievements!

It has been a great year!

In ten years we have fulfilled the dreams of 6530 children and youth in Colombia, thanks to organizations and individuals that, like you, reinforce us that we must continue with our work. Thanks to your support, during 2016 we have reached the following goals:

1467 children and youth develop Life Skills, promoting peace and coexistence

16 free time activities were offered weekly in our three chapters

20 youth obtained scholarships for higher education

First Solar System Classroom in Latin America inaugurated in Cazuca (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-5BMeHl2sjw&t=5s)

6 youth represented Colombia at the international Festival 16 (http://www.festival16.org/)

We’ve acquired a new Arts House!

15 youth hired in the organization for leadership positions

We couldn't have made all of these possible if it wasn't for people like you who believe in the dreams of 1467 children in Colombia. In an ongoing world of violence and harm, we stand together strong with those who believe hope prevails over fear, love is stronger than hate and that dreams can be fulfilled.

And because all achievements must be celebrated, check out "Festival Cazuca Sueña (Cazuá Dreams Festival)" and see how Tiempo de Juego decided to celebrate its 10 anniversary and a decade of building a more just and peaceful world: http://bit.ly/2gAfE6y

Thanks for a wonderful year! Let's make sure 2017 is even greater.

Thank you!
Thank you!
